Newspaper Second Page
In a previous post I discussed an second article and now I have starting researching how inside pages of newspapers look and the codes and conventions that they follow for my own newspaper.
From my research I have learnt that the inside spread usually has an main article with another story surronding it. for my own newspaper I am going to try and follow the same codes and conventions of the newspapers I have studies
Week 15- Ancillary project one research
I have started my research for ancillary project one which is a newspaper poster
I have noticed that most newspaper posters are very simple and plain and the nameplate is the only source of colour on a white page.

Week 14 - Final Newspaper Front Cover
I have finshed my front cover!
It is not as good as what I expected previously but that is due to lack of preparation.
My front cover has the main title and the crown which i showed earlier in my blog.
I think the most professional aspect of my newspaper is the by line which has the address of the website which i am going to do for my ancillary project.
The block of colour that is under the article is there to give colour to the page as the page was looking quite monotonous with just the same shade of blue and white. This is to catch the eye of my audience
Week 13 - Newspaper article research.
Today I have started researching newspaper articles and the type of language that is used. I have an idea for my second main article about an haunted house. I am going to look at supernatural relalted articles to see the codes and conventations that newspaper use when talking about supernatural activity.
I used the search website google to see if they have been any haunted house stories and I found one.
Here is an extract from "Top 10 haunted houses in the uk" from the guardian newspaper "Tuesday 14th October 2008"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2008/oct/14/haunted-hotels-uk
"It was reported on September 25 1570 that the Lady Marion Carruthers "did willfully take her own life by leaping from the lookout tower of Comlongon Castle and did break her head and bones". It's no surprise to learn that grass refused to grow on the spot where the cruelly imprisoned wife struck the ground or that her sorrowful spirit still stalks this luxurious mediaeval castle on the Scottish borders. The fact that her ghost is green, smells of apples and moves jewellery around rooms is perhaps a little bit special. Marion hunters should request the Carruthers suite, her centre of operations."
As you can see the language used is direct and it connects straight with the audience. When I am writing my second main article I will use this article for inspiration

Local pub Montague Arms is in a fierce battle with the local Lewisham council after a wild riot last night. Montague arm Pub goers feared for their lives yesterday after a group of yobs decided to ruin a peaceful quiz night. Pub Owners Pub owner Patrick “Paddy” Phillips, 50, is fighting for the pub to stay open saying that it is the “Heart of the community”. A gang of 11 hooligans aged between 18 and 24 were seen to be making trouble with the regular pub goers. A witness said “We were all just enjoying our usual quiz night when these lads came and were causing havoc”. Lewisham Council say that The Montague Arms has become a harbor for anti social behavior and do not want it to continue. Lewisham council representative Bushri Brown says “Lewisham council understand that this pub is important to the community but the trouble that follows this place is unbelievable and frankly unacceptable”
Campaigners have been fighting for the boozer to stay open as three pubs have already been closed down in the area. “We will have no local pubs in this area if they shut down this one” says community leader Paige Dobson “This pub has been around for over 100 years, it must not shut down and we will fight to the end for this one”
Montague Arms have been around for over 100 years and the local community will do anything to keep it open. Paddy says that the rioters that came into the pub last night is not a common thing. “This is the first time this has happen this small event should not be the reason for closure” Tomorrow pub goers are going to protest outside the pub whilst paddy and Lewisham council discuss the future of Montague Arms"

Week 9
Today I have been researching different nameplates from various newspaper to get inspirations into what type of nameplateI would like for my local newspaper I looked at an American newspaper to see if they do it differently. Here are some examples:
This is a technique called blocking. It is when a colour has been incorporated into the nameplate to draw attention to just the title of the newspaper. The newspaper has made the comsumer look at the nameplate which draws attention to the brand. The nameplate is blocked with colour to make the nameplate have more domninance.

Week 8
I have decided that on my mast head I will have the Lewisham crown because the crown is a symbol of the Lewisham borough and people will instanelty regcognize it. I had to take a picture from online as I was not able to take a picture of the crown individually. I used Adobe Photoshop to cut the background as I just need the crown.

Week 7
Wednesday 13th October
Today I am going to look at the type of typography that my newspaper should have. With the help with this website http://jonahschrogin.blogspot.com/2007/02/newspaper-typography.html.
I have found out that most newspapers use the font Sans Serif as it is more pleasing to the eye and it is easier to read than most f0nts. I was planning on using the font Sylfaen but I decided to follow the conventions of a normal newspaper which is to use the font sans serif. I actually think that font looks more professional and can relate to both classes as the font sylfaen does look a bit more middle class.

Week 6
Wendesday 6th October
I have various pictures that will inspire me. There are pictures of the audience I am targeting. The people I am targeting are mostly middle aged women and the elderly. The reason I have chosen these people as my audience is because it is moslty women in my boruough that stay at home and as the picture of the post box suggests it will be posted through their letter box. I am also targeting mothers and working class people in the lewisham bourough. I also have a picture of a corner store for workers on their way to work to pick up for free. My newpspaer is targeted at all religons and ethincities. From my resrarch most newspapers main article are about issues that effect the local community such as crime, closures of important things such as pubs etc.

Week 4
Friday 1st October 2010
I have to use different types of multimedia so in this blog you will not only see pictures, but hopefully you will be able to see video and audio to make my blog have more platforms. I have the results from my questionnaire here which was very helpful. The audience that I asked gave me positive feedback about the idea that my newspaper has so far. Here are the results of my questionnaire:

Week 3
Wednesday 29th September 2010
I had a few ideas today and was thinking how my local newspaper is going to challenge the way a real local newspaper is. To answer my own question, I think that with the right in-design skills it will look like a real local newspaper also if I do enough research and that includes my questionnaire for what people expect in a local newspaper, I think it should challenge a real one. I just have to wait for the final results. I have also changed my target audience for my newspaper as before I was aiming it at 21-40 I have now changed it to 21-60 as I have found out that older people tend to read local newspaper more as it affecting the local community most of them have spent they lives in.

Week 2
Wednesday 22nd September 2010
I have just started my presentation I am going to compare two newspaper. South London press and The Daily Shopper, as there are targeted at two different audiences. When I start analysing them I will put it in this blog. My teacher gave me some more ideas and said I should make another rough draft to show my thought process throughout out the whole project. It is going to be very hard as I found out I have to make a poster advertising my newspaper and pick either radio advertisement or two pages from a website! I have decided to pick two paged from a website as I think I will be able to do it and it seems enjoyable. At this stage I am still not completely sure which one I will pick but I need to make a decision.

Week 1
10th September 2010
Hello blog! I am back again to share my experiences whilst making a media project. Last year I made a music magazine called Howdy yo! This year I am going to work hard and not leave things too late. My in-design and Photoshop skills have improved slightly but I still need to learn more. This time around I am making a local newspaper. I decided to make a local newspaper because the skills I learnt whilst doing the foundation portfolio should transfer into making the newspaper therefore helping me. Throughout this blog I will be sharing ideas, my feelings and also how I end up with the final project. Wish me luck! I made a quick newspaper front cover for my preliminary task. Here it is:

Throughout this blog I will be sharing ideas, my feelings and also how I end up with the final project. Wish me luck! I made a quick newspaper front cover for my preliminary task. Here it is:
This was my Preliminary newspaper front cover. This does not look like a newspaper at all and it does not look professional. This draft has a mast head and it has some elements of a newspaper but it looks more like a greeting card. I did not research any newspaper before I made this so this is why it does not look like a newspaper. In my final newspaper draft I will add more elements. There will be more articles on the front cover. I will also add advertisements as that is how a local newspaper will be able to run.
Wednesday 15th September 2010
Today I learnt that the name of a newspaper is not called a mast head like what it is called in a magazine it is actually called a nameplate so I need to remember to call it a name plate not a masthead! I have a few names for my local newspaper but I am going to do a questionnaire and ask people what name they think is more eye-catching. I also learnt that most of my newspaper is going to be constructed in in-design which I am slightly worried about as I am not that confident using in-design. I have to make the first two pages of a newspaper so I have to research local newspapers to see what they are like. I have to make either a poster advertising my newspaper, radio advertisement or two pages from a website so that is also things I need to think about.
The first week has been quite intresting as I have learnt new termnology that I will be using throughout the project. So far I have used photoshop which was very useful for my preliminary task. I am not that good at photoshop so that might have been the reason why my preliminary task does not look like a newspaper.
Friday 17th September 2010
I have learnt more newspaper terminology such as by-line which is usually the name of the reporter and jump line which is used to tell the reader the page and column number where they can find the rest of the story. This has helped me for when I have to make my own local newspaper. I have drawn a rough draft of what I think a newspaper should look like: The first week has been quite intresting as I have learnt new termnology that I will be using throughout the project.
